Staying Fit From Head To Toe
Staying Fit
From Head
To Toe
If you haven’t checked out the Buffalo Bayou Hike and Bike Trails, be sure to do so soon! The path winds along the bayou with great views of downtown Houston’s skyline, and whether you’re hiking or biking, it’s great exercise – which is not only important for you, but your feet, too!
Staying fit from head to toe – literally – is essential for your overall wellbeing, and that includes your foot health. In fact, exercise benefits feet in a number of ways. It boosts circulation which helps reduce risk of nerve damage in feet as well as diabetic wounds that won’t heal. It helps in maintaining an ideal weight, too, which keeps the stress on your feet to a minimum. Strong feet are also less likely to sustain an injury and will allow you to stay active and enjoy the activities you love. You can exercise feet and toes by doing small exercises like flexing and pointing, picking things up with your toes, or raising up and down on them. Stretching calf muscles help keep Achilles tendons limber, too.
Of course, taking precautions to protect feet during fitness routines is just as important as exercising itself! Make sure you have the proper shoes for your activities and that they fit correctly. If you have biomechanical or structural abnormalities, look into getting custom orthotics that will address your specific foot issues. In addition, cross-train to help cut down on repetitive stress which in turn will decrease your chance of injury.
