Dynamic Duo: AmnioFix And Laser Therapy
Dynamic Duo:
AmnioFix And
Laser Therapy
In our Internet age, there’s a website for everything. Did you know you can go online and rank your favorite dynamic duo? Currently, Batman and Robin top the list, followed by cartoon figures Tom and Jerry, and Muppets Bert and Ernie. At Parker Foot & Ankle, we could do some ranking of our own—like making AmnioFix and laser therapy our number one duo for treating non-healing wounds like diabetic foot ulcers or speeding your recovery from surgical incisions.
AmnioFix is the trade name of a group of allografts—sections of tissue that are transplanted from one person to treat another. Sometimes procedures use your own tissue, such as veins for heart bypass surgery, tendon transfers, or skin transplants. These products are made from placental tissues that would otherwise be disposed of. They are processed into usable forms that are dehydrated and sterile, but they still contain the basic collagen structure and growth factors that help your own tissue heal faster.
One way podiatrists use these grafts are in treating diabetic ulcers or bedsores on feet and ankles. When you have diabetes or are bedridden for a period of time, your circulation can be compromised and make it hard for your body to heal damaged tissue in your feet. AmnioFix provides a barrier to protect the wound from infection and a matrix around which new tissue cells develop.
By adding laser therapy to the mix, we increase the effectiveness of the grafts. That’s because our HyperBlue and MLS lasers help your body form new capillaries in the damaged area. They also stimulate your cells to be more active and use energy more efficiently, which gives a boost to their ability to repair themselves and regenerate. An added plus is that laser therapy can also have an anti-inflammatory effect and reduce your pain.
Another application of our “dynamic duo” is during surgery—especially when repairing nerves. The AmnioFix grafts resemble nerve tissue and are used to wrap around the repaired nerve to add stability and promote healing. Laser therapy aids in healing and allows you to recover from surgery more quickly.
