Conditioning To Prevent An Ankle Sprain

Conditioning To

Prevent An

Ankle Sprain

Man Holding His AnkleIf you are training for the upcoming Humane Society Fun Run at Sam Houston Park on Sunday, March 23, you will want to make sure your feet and legs are conditioned, so that you don’t end up pulling a muscle, or worse—spraining your ankle. An ankle sprain can sideline you for more than just one race, and if it isn’t healed properly, it can give you trouble for the rest of your life.

Conditioning means gradually building up to the level where you want to be, instead of going straight to a higher intensity work out that your body isn’t ready for. This can take weeks or even months, and it should involve cross-training so that you are working different muscles. Before you run, you need to prepare with a warm-up jog in place and a gentle stretch of your muscles. Another important thing to do is wear the right shoes for running, and replace your shoes when they wear down. It’s crucial to listen to your body, and if you feel pain you should stop the activity you are doing.

Should you happen to suffer an ankle sprain, you should seek treatment right away to avoid further complications. Some sprains can be treated with just rest, ice, compression, and elevation, or RICE. Others take physical therapy, immobilization, or even surgery, which is why it’s important to have any injury checked by a medical professional.
