Are Your Winter

Boots Causing

Foot Pain?

With winter in full effect, it’s important to make sure that your winter boots aren’t causing foot pain or other issues. We rarely think about it, but choosing the right footwear, especially in icy, slippery conditions, is crucial to having healthy feet.

One of the biggest problems caused by the cold months is nail fungus. When you take wet conditions and mix it with a warm place for bacteria to thrive it’s a recipe for disaster! To thwart off fungus, try using deodorant with antiperspirant on your feet (yes, really!). Also, give your shoes a chance to breathe for at least 24 hours before wearing them again, and wear socks that are clean and dry to avoid locking in moisture.

Some winter boots that are popular with the ladies, such as Uggs, have a flat sole. This can cause heel pain over time. Luckily, plantar fasciitis can often be addressed conservatively using a custom orthotic. This type of device absorbs the shock and takes pressure off of the heel.

Also watch out for footwear that doesn’t fit properly. Too tight or too loose shoes can lead to many different kinds of problems. Blisters are only the beginning when you don’t have a good fit. You might suffer from Morton’s Neuroma when you wear ill-fitting shoes. This condition is also called “electric toe” because you may feel tingling or burning in the afflicted area.
