Press Release: Local Foot Surgeon Uses New Surgical Techniques for Common Foot Conditions

Dr. Robert Parker is one of the first foot surgeons in the country to perform a new surgical technique for minimally invasive plantar fasciotomies. The new Kobygard system developed by Koby Surgical allows surgeons such as Dr. Parker to perform this procedure through a small incision while surrounding tissue is protected from trauma. This technique can greatly reduce the recovery time and technical difficulty associated with traditional surgical procedure used to relieve heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis.

Plantar Fasciitis

The condition known as plantar fasciitis (heel pain) is caused when the plantar fascia that runs from the base of the patients' toes to the heel becomes inflamed where it connects to the base of the heel. A large percentage of heel pain sufferers are eventually cured or their pain is managed with non surgical treatments such as custom orthotics, steroid injections and stretching devices. Still there are an estimated 50,000 heel pain patients that require surgical intervention every year in the United States. Heel pain surgery has been performed with good results since the 1950's. Originally the "spur" of the heel bone was removed along with a section of the plantar fascia. While the heel pain was cured, patient recovery was often lengthy and painful. In the early 1990's endoscopic techniques were introduced that allowed surgeons to "release" the desired one-third to two-thirds of the plantar fascia with the aid of a tiny camera by using two small incisions that allow the camera and instruments to pass trough the bottom of the heel.

Minimally Invasive Means Faster Recovery

With the introduction of the Kobygard system, Dr. Parker can now use one small incision to perform plantar fasciotomies and Morton's neuroma decompressions in a matter of minutes. These new techniques are performed by inserting the Kobygard device through the incision after preparatory instruments have created channels above and below the ligament or fascia. Once the desired section of ligament or fascia has been "released" one or two small stitches are required to close the incision.

Can be Performed in a Minor OR Setting

Since this new surgical system does not require the use of any special endoscopic or other expensive equipment, these surgical procedures can be performed in a minor surgical procedure room eliminating additional costs to insurance companies, surgery centers and patients.
