Parker Podiatry | Houston Foot Doctor

Houston, TX 10/31/08 --- a new painless procedure is now available for the treatment of fungal (mycotic) nails. This breakthrough technology was introduced at the American Podiatric Medical Association annual conference in Hawaii this past summer ('08). It is known as the inpulse pinpoint laser treatment. To date, it had been utilized by top podiatric surgeons in California, and now introduced to the southwest by Dr. Robert G. Parker, local board certified foot surgeon, of Houston, Texas.

Onychomycosis (fungus of the nail) is a chronic, progressive, debilitating disease of the nail, nail bed and matrix (root). Over the years dermatophytes (fungal elements) enter the nail bed from the skin. The traditional treatments of topical creams, lotions, etc, although somewhat effective, are difficult to use in chronic and progressive cases. The main stay of treatment has been oral medications. Lamisil (terbinafine) has been the most effective treatment recently in the eradication of onychomycosis with an approximately 70% cure rate; however, blood tests need to be taken due to the fact that there are side effects, especially with the liver. Cost is also a consideration as well. Treatment needs to be at least for three months and recurrence rate has been high. Often a second round of three months oral medicine is necessary. There are other medications including Diflucan, which is much too expensive and takes a year of treatment. Sporonox, another treatment, has a much lower effective rate and also is expensive. "To say we can now address this problem safely without medicines is nothing short of amazing." says Dr. Parker.

The newest treatment, PathoLase laser:

The uniqueness of this laser is revolutionary with the added advantage of it not being painful and it does not cause a burn. To date, no known side effects have been found. The long-term effect seems promising. The studies that were done by patholase are extremely encouraging. Coupled with good hygiene of the toes, the patient should experience good, long-term results.

"This technology is a huge breakthrough and like no other available today", states Dr. Parker. "It is performed in one treatment, right in the comfort of our office, without pain, drugs, or anesthesia." a use of an invisible light and usually takes less than 30 minutes. Patholase, is a laser technology company with an impressive list of accomplishments made up of world class scientists. They have now introduced its first patented laser technology into the marketplace. This procedure surpasses those of the more dangerous medications and has a nearly 88-89% success rate, in its clinical studies, to successfully and safely destroy the fungus.

"We are so excited to bring this technology to the Houston area", explains Dr. Parker. "This procedure is greatly needed for our patients. Besides the obvious embarrassment of having these nails, they often cause pain, infection and in the diabetic, ulcers.

Dr. Parker has been serving the Houston area for over 35 years with offices located at the Nottingham Forrest Professional Bldg, 14441 Memorial Dr. Suite 16. Dr. Parker is also trained in Flashlamp and CO2 laser. He is the cofounder of the Harris County Podiatric Surgical Residency program and served as an examiner for the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. A published author, and a leader in the field of podiatric surgery.

Is this laser treatment painful?

The laser light beam has no effect on healthy tissue. There is no discomfort during or after the treatment.

It takes approximately 10 minutes to treat a big toe. Naturally, if you have more than one toe infected, it may take a little longer. The vast majority of our patients require only one treatment.

Does it really work?

Our clinical studies to date reveal that over 88% of treated patients show significant improvement. In most cases fungus nails are completely cured.

How soon will I see improvement?

On average, a toenail will replace itself every 6 to 9 months. Healthy new growth will be visible within the first 3 months.

Is this treatment safe?

Yes. In our clinical studies there have been no adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or known side effects. As you may know, the use of medication available today for treatment of fungus nails carries with it possible systemic involvement (commonly the liver and kidney). This laser treatment does not.

No. No drugs or topical ointments are required.
